Must-Dos in Prague

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic (or Czechia) and is definitely worth a visit for a variety of reasons. After visiting in February 2019, it’s left me wanting to go again. With delicious food, stunning architecture and exciting nightlife, you won’t be left wondering what to do when visiting this city at the core of Central Europe. Here are 7 Must-Dos for Prague:

  • Take a look at the Prague Astronomical Clock – In the city centre of Prague on the wall of the Old Town Hall is the large astronomical clock. Dating back from 1410, this mysterious Gothic masterpiece is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the first oldest that is still in operation today. Every hour all day long, the twelve wooden-carved statues of the Apostles come out at the doorways above the clock, as the clock strikes.
  • Have a Trdelník (chimney cake) – Whilst this delicious, sweet snack originates from Hungary, you won’t be short of them in Prague. It is a type of spit cake, which consists of rolled dough that is then wrapped around a stick, grilled and sprinkled with sugar and walnut mix. You can also get other flavours, with fillings such as ice cream. It’s particularly yummy during the cold winter months, which will certainly help you warm up!
  • Have a gander at Charles Bridge – A spectacular bridge finished in 1402, it was the most important way of transport between Prague Castle and the city’s Old Town area. What draws many to it is not only the brilliant views of the Vltava river and city centre, but the fascinating 30 mainly baroque-style statues and statuaries dotted all along the bridge. Whilst these are replicas of the original statues, the originals are exhibited in the Lapidarium of the National Museum.
  • Explore Prague Castle – Being one of the largest castles in the world, Prague Castle is filled with palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of both Romanesque and Gothic architecture. It’s considered Czech Republic’s most significant monument and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also features many gardens and towers. If you don’t want to enter the grounds, be sure not to miss out on the ceremonial changing of the guard at noon in the first courtyard of Prague Castle, which happens every day. The area is also a fantastic place for panoramic views of the Gothic city.
  • Visit a quirky bar – The nightlife in Prague is great with five-storey clubs and pubs where you can even pour your own beer! However, aside from these, they also have underground basement bars and secret (legal) hangout spots. Alibi Cocktails and Music Bar is certainly worth a visit. Serving a variety of sweet and sour cocktails, the dungeon bar, which features a small dance-floor, often plays electro swing, which really puts you in the party mood. Czechs drink more beer per capita than any other country in the world. This is partly probably due to the fact that beer is on average around £1.15 per pint! Be sure to have a Pilsner at one point during your stay.
  • Walk along the John Lennon Wall – Since the 1980s, this normal wall was made extraordinary with John Lennon-inspired art, such as pieces of lyrics from The Beatles’ songs, as well as other inscriptions based on local and global causes. It’s located in a quiet area near to the French embassy, but the wall definitely cries out noise, representing love and peace for the world and a memorial for John Lennon after his assassination in 1980.
  • Taste traditional Czech food – There are many affordable traditional Czech restaurants throughout the capital, which will give you a great taste of the tasty cuisine. Czech cuisine today is quite meat-based and often comprises of a first course, traditionally being soup, a main dish and third course being a dessert or compote. Why not give some typical Czech dishes a try, such as pečené vepřové s knedlíky a se zelím (roast pork with dumplings and cabbage), guláš (goulash) or svíčková na smetaně (marinated sirloin) ? There are also many options available for non-meat eaters.

Thanks for reading – I hope you get the opportunity to visit this beautiful city.
